Fast Facts on the Middle East Conflict

Encyclopedia of the Middle East
Ever been confused about the Middle East? Get confused about who was in charge on a particular year in history? Perplexed about how the names of cities and regions changed over time?

This is your book.

I have heard Randall Price in bible prophecy conferences. He is an outstanding archeologist and bible scholar and is uniquely qualified to put this book together.

There is so much disinformation about the Middle East. If you want to be mislead, follow CNN and the major media players. If you want a "Reader's Digest" version of the Middle East, this is your book. Dr. Price is devoutly supportive of Israel and its right to the land. (Genesis 15:18)

It is a skinny book but chock full of information. I have it on my shelf like an encyclopedia reference. Thank you, Dr. Price for your work. We look forward to your visit to the Twin Cities in September 2003 at a bible prophecy conference. God bless.

A Veritable 'Gold Mine' Of Information On The Middle East.
This is another excellent work by Randall Price which will be of enormous value and assistance to many in understanding the apparent complexities surrounding the ongoing Middle East conflict.

The Middle East conflict is analysed from it's very beginning, with most issues being resolved in a question and answer format, but at the same time providing a considerable amount of information.

The Palestinian 'problem' is also examined with attention being given to the origin of the Palestinian 'people' and who they actually are, the refugee issue, the involvement of the UN & the International community and how the Palestinians are funded.

Of particular note is that the Palestinian Authority is quoted as spending some ten million Euros per month to sponsor terrorist activities & to fund official hate propaganda in Palestinian schools (textbooks etc) and the official Palestinian media. This is revealed as being the same amount that the Palestinian Authority receives from the European Union.

Yasser Arafat himself is quoted as having personal holdings of some $1.3 BILLION. References are provided to substantiate these statements.

Special sections are devoted to the 'intifadas' and how the conflict has been covered by the media.

All of the Arab-Israeli wars are covered in some detail, plus the subjects of Jerusalem, Islamic terrorism & the Iraqi conflict.

Important references are also included in relation to the so called 'peace process', including the Camp David Accords, the Oslo Accords, UN Resolutions 242 etc., the Saudi 'peace' plan and how/why these attempts to resolve the conflict have all failed. Both the Jewish and Arab claims to the Land are examined. Maps and charts are plentifully provided with many myths being dispelled and many facts confirmed.

One particularly interesting section describes how Yasser Arafat has used the media to promote the creation and dissemination of a revisionist 'Palestinian history'. A process described here where the Palestinian Authority has used the press to gain International recognition as an 'independent Arab nation', despite the fact that it has never officially existed as such. Nationalistic actions include the flying of a 'Palestinian flag', the election of a 'Palestinian President', the adoption of a constitution, declaration of independence, the proclamation of Jerusalem as the 'capital of Palestine' and the reception of foreign diplomats at the Palestinian Authority HQ at the Orient House in Jerusalem.

The media's attentive reporting of such events helping to establish the perception that the Palestinian Authority is a 'legitimate national entity' rather than just a political one. All of this receiving the attention without any media entity reporting that a 'Palestinian national entity' has never existed at any time. A procedure which has been exploited within International circles amongst those who find it politically expedient in pursuing their own interests in the region.

Without such books as this many could be easily swept along by the media euphoria which can be distort the reality on the ground.

This book is a veritable 'gold mine' of information on the Middle East and I highly recommend it to everyone. Randall Price's expertise on the Middle East is considerable. He has written many excellent books including 'Jerusalem In Prophecy', 'Unholy War' & 'The Coming Last Days Temple'.

A Field Guide to the Birds' Nest in the United States East of the Mississippi River (Peterson Field Guide Series)

Not Many Like This Out There
This is a highly recommended book for identifying bird's nests. It's amazing to see all the different types of nests that birds make. These creatures have true workmanship. It must have been a great challenge for the photographer(s) to find and photograph all the different nests throughout this fascinating book. You don't see many books out there on the market like this, so I recommend it.

Unique and excellent resource for birders.
This book has information which to my knowledge cannot be found anywhere else. The photographs of nests and eggs must be seen to be appreciated. It is not difficult to identify a bird on the basis of its nest or egg using this book.

Excellent Reptile Resource and Field Guide
The long-awaited field guide to the diverse reptile populations of East Africa. This book was everything I expected it to be and more. Comprehensive listings, excellent photography and detailed information on habitat/distribution, natural history, conservation status etc. I can't say enough good things about this book, the list of authors should speak for themselves! ;-)

No serious herper's library is complete without this book...

Perfect blend of science and user-friendliness
I was hoping to be able to buy this book before my trip to Kenya in August 01. Unfortunately, it wasn't yet published at that time. I thought I could pick up a decent field guide in Nairobi, but I was wrong. The best I could find there was a short paperback with fuzzy photos, anecdotes, and very incomplete list of species. Nonetheless, I had a great trip and identified some nice herps.
In December I saw that this Field Guide was out, so I bought it and found it to be outstanding. A nice fat book jam packed with beautiful and useful photos, great descriptions, habitat and range info, and natural history. There is so much precise and credible information in this book it is amazing. So much work must have gone into producing this thing! The species coverage is vast. For example, there is complete info on over thirty species of chameleon. The identification keys are also practical and simple. The writing is straightfoward -- minimal superscientist jargon -- but also precise and complete and consistent. Good sections on how to find herps, how to use the book, dealing with snakebite, etc.
I am very glad I bought this book. The authors have my admiration for this achievement.

First 24 Hours of War in the Pacific
Published in Hardcover by Burd Street Press (June, 1998)
Author: Donald J. Young
Average review score:

The rest of the Day That Lives in Infamy
Most of us associate the beginning of World War II with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Actually, Pearl Harbor was only one of numerous attacks carried out by the Japanese that day. Their true objectives were the mines of Malaya and the oil fields of Borneo--Pearl Harbor was a side-show which was necessary to keep the United States from interfering.

In this book Donald J. Young vividly describes the other events of December 7, 1941, giving minute by minute details seldom found elsewhere. He describes the inept responses of our (U.S. and British) military forces to attacks which should not have come as any surprise, but did. In the last chapter, he fills us in on the reaction in Washington, where the Japanese attacks may actually have solved a problem for President Roosevelt.

For the serious WW II historian this is a valuable book. For the casual reader this is an interesting and entertaining book, particularly if you are already aware of some of the controversy surrounding the events of the day.

nd informative
Military historian Donald J. Young takes the reader to eleven Pacific sites where war is about to change everything. He puts us on doomed Wake Island where Major Devereaux is ordering his Marine bugler to sound "Call to Arms" as an invasion force looms offshore and bombs devestate. We are with more marines in North China, embassy guards, who must surrender or die on the spot. The bugler sounds "Retreat" for one last time and then breaks his bugle across his knee and hurls it away. We are aboard the PanAm flying boat "China Clipper" as it desperately tries to flee Wake Island already under attack. We are on indefensible Guam when an ill-equipped handful of American Marines, mindful that no U.S. Marine unit has ever gone down without a fight, march off to make a stand agasinst an invasion force of 5000. The Marines are armed with 1903 Springfield rifles, two .30 caliber machine guns, and a few.45 sidearms. They are assisted by Insular Guards, native Chamorros who also carry ought three Springfields but theirs are stamped ""Do not shoot. For training purposes only." We are at Clark Field in the Phillipines where B-17s are caught on the ground by aerial raiders. We are abandoning the ill-fated 2100 ton lumber schooner "Cynthia Olsen" torpedoed and sinking off Hawaii, the first U.S. merchantman to be sunk in World War Two but not the last. Reading this book will remind you how lucky we are there can never be another be another Pearl Harbor. Oh, sure! (review taken from my review in"Vapor Trails", news letter of the Mass. Chapter of the 8th Air Force Historical Society of which I am editor and publisher.)

guidebook SUPREME !
I was planning a cruise to Alaska. I chose "Fodor's 2001 Alaska" as a guidebook and was so impressed, I purchased two more of them for my cruise travelmates. This book went with me wherever I traveled in the "land of the midnight sun". Not only did Fodor's guidebook describe the cruise ships to the inth, but all of the activities, etc. Every bit of the text was accurate to my experiences. This was my first cruise, and my first trip to Alaska. I found this book to be indispensible! The data on Alaska, the facts, the figures, the special places to see, things to do, walks, hikes, eats, animals, and people...all here in crisp detail for you to enjoy. Upon my return to the "lower 48", I even narrated my Alaska photo albums with information I retrieved from this book. History, indiginous peoples, it's all here. Do get this book if you are thinking of going to Alaska, or returning to Alaska. All text is up to date, with maps, etc. Excellent resource! From the Inside Passage to Denali National Park I traveled, and I learned much more about this great land we call Alaska because of Fodor's book. I am now planning on going back to this beautiful place in great part due to reading this guidebook.

Exploring Alaska on a budget, get this book.
This book contains a great list of places to stay and eat with prices. Some of my favorite sections of book include the following: Listing of Best Unspoiled Small Towns, which include Kodiak, Petersburg, and Cordova; Listing of Strange Comunity Events which include Cordova's Ice Worm Festival, Fairbanks' Midnight Sun Baseball Game nad Nomes Polar Bear Swim/Bathtub Race. If you are going to Alaska's number 1 destination, Denali National Park, make sure you pick up a copy of Discovering Denali.

Fragments of Memory: A Story of a Syrian Family (Modern Middle East Literature in Translation)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (September, 1993)
Authors: Hanna Minah, Mina Hanna, Olive E. Kenny, Lorne Kenny, and Hanna Mina
Average review score:

Poverty, Struggle and Effect of globalization in Syria
Fragments of Memory is a socio-historical novel that illustrates the characteristics of rural life in Syria at the time of the French Mandate. This biographical novel is particularly effective in illustrating issues related to the exercise of power and the role of the state. There will also be an analysis of the expectations of family life and the respective roles of men, women and children and the role of religion in daily life. The Novel offers considerable insight into relations of power and the role of the state in rural society. The vicissitudes of the author's family in al-Suwaydiya and the village of al-Akbar clearly show that the landowner and the village headman - mukhtar - held all the power, especially when the landowner was also the mukhtar as was the case in al-Suwaydiya. The first chapters of the novel describe the family's move from the administrative capital Latakiya to the coastal village of al-Suwaydiya. There the family virtually submits to a sharecropping arrangement with the mukhtar, Mr. Elias, who owns the land, which entitled it to earn a quarter of the income accruing from the cultivation of mulberry trees while the rest went to the mukhtar (p.19). The paramount characteristic of this arrangement, however, is the relationship of dependency that the family develops upon the assistance of the mukhtar that borders on slavery.

powerful story
This was a powerful and sad story about a young boy growing up in Syria, and about the hardships in a person's life due to culture and geography. Most people don't know much about Syria, let alone the Middle East. The story does a superb job of revealing the agony of hunger, sickness, poverty, the marginalization of women and the poor, and it brings up the excesses of our own American society. It becomes obvious that Syria lacks the infrastructure to realistically support its people. Thus, they are forced to live day by day, barely avoiding injustice and death. It's a miracle that the author survives to tell his story. Sickness and poverty take on a new meaning in this book, showing how death can be much more humane than life itself, and how God can be ruthless, how begging can be dehumanizing. There are just so many elements of the human experience compacted into this story. If anything, after reading this book, I gained an appreciation for the relative comfort and security of my life. Lastly, I think this book shows how work and the ability to work give value to a person's life. A truly worthwhile read.
